To kick off the first homesick kit, I wanted to start by working on the packaging for the Singapore kit. Coming from Singapore, finding and working with Singaporean would be easier hence I started with Singapore first. Singapore was initially a port city and from old to new, has become populated with people of all races and colours making it a multicultural society. This vast and diverse society can easily be compared to the traditional designs of Batik in my opinion. Batik is a old south-east asian design that is clustered with patterns and an explosion of colours. And this design in a way reflects the Singaporean society, image and home. Hence, I wanted to further explore, study and incorporate the Batik design into my homesick kit. Having a Batik design as the outer packing will be the first line of defence to hit you with the shot of nostalgia and remind you of home, or at-least, that's the plan. The following image is a rough base design I did digitally which doesn't fully embrace the batik tradition but is my own take on the classic design. The base colour palette is rather blend as I wanted to create something easy on the eyes. The flower on this Batik is also a hibiscus and not an Orchid. I need to later redesign this Batik design as I want to present the national flower of Singapore which is an Orchid to further represent Singapore and the idea of home. This first design will be presented to a target audience of Singaporean Students studying abroad to get their opinions. And from there, I will adept the design.
